Lewis and Clark Caverns, A Memorable Adventure

Family at lewis and cldark caverns in Montana

When I think of adventure, I often think of something that ushers me out of normal comfort. An adventure pushes the box of “usual” and stretches me into an unknown for a new experience. For some, that sort of adventure means a fun road trip. For others, it means a bit more exploration. Either way, this route will present each member of your group an incredible Montana experience.

If you are somewhere in between those spaces of longing for adventure, then the Lewis and Clark Caverns just east of Whitehall, MT will be right up your alley.

Discovered in the late 1800’s, this extensive network of limestone caverns, a massive network of limestone systems, was included in Montana’s first Official State Park. Providing a look back in time, these fascinating caves, lined with towering columns, stalactites, stalagmites, and helictites offer an intricate look into a world devoid of light. Get ready to witness the fascination of the natural pools of water below and big- eared bats above. The cool cavern tours take you about 2 miles through a small glimpse of the massive underground limestone systems and take about 2 hours. You’ll have a guide the whole way sharing knowledge of the history and the geological splendors. It really is cool in both senses of the word, so don't forget to pack a sweatshirt.

Hiking, biking, camping, fishing, and history. There will be Montana outdoor activities for everyone in your family and travel party.

Read more about the history of the caverns here!

In the summer, from May to September, there are camping sites, RV hook ups, running water, and bathrooms.

With Fox Hollow Inn, Bozeman as your home base, load up the caravan and take a day trip to explore the caverns, explore the Ruby and Jefferson Valleys, enjoy the numerous mountain ranges and the breathtaking views they offer. Fox Hollow is set up in a great location near the airport and travel routes to truly explore Montana's treasures. We explored the caverns as a small family, they'd also be great for the solo adventurer, couples vacationing, or to kick off you large family summer gathering!

Lewis & Clark Caverns to Twin Bridges (35 miles) – Get back on Highway 2 west until you reach Whitehall. Take Highway 55 south and it will soon merge with Highway 41. Continue south to Twin Bridges, a town sitting at the junction of three rivers and a great spot for fly-fishing. Enjoy a meal at the Blue Anchor or the Shack right downtown!! You’ll love the friendly Montana hospitality and the menu options.

Twin Bridges to Virginia City (28 miles) – From Twin Bridges, take Highway 287 south until you reach Virginia City, a historic old town with preserved buildings from the days of the old west.
